19th Jan 2010: Deliver us from stinginess, and help us to be a generous nation

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38

“And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. Luke 16:9

But this [I say]: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. [So let] each one [give] as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God [is] able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, alwa ys having all sufficiency in all [things], may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-9

Heal Your Tongue

Our Tongue will exert constructive influence:

This will take place when we speak the truth Eph 4:15; Mt 5:37; Dt 23:23; Ex 20:16; Pr 12:17

When we make edifying remarks Eph 4:29; Col 3:16; Pro 10:21; Pro 15:4; Pro 15:30

When we communicate blessing  Pro 16:24; Job 16:5; Isa 50:4; Pro 12:25; 1 Cor 4:12

When our speech is to the glory of God  Ps 109:30; Ps 71:15; Ps 35:28; Ps 40:10; Ps 119:172; Ps 66:17

When our words further relationships   Pro 12:18; Pro 12:6; Pro  14:25; Ecc 10:12

God judges the use of the tongue

He knows all our words   Ps 139:4

He knows the heart attitude behind them  Jer 17:10; Ps 139:1-3

Our words will be judged   Mt 12:36 + 37, Ps 64:8

God’s help is needed to bridle the tongue

We are exhorted by the Word of God  Jas 1:26; Ecc 5:2 + 6; Col 3:8)

We are unable to do so in our own strength  Jas 3:8

We need divine assistance     Ps 141:3; Ps 51:15;Ps 120:2)

A godly person controls their  tongue   Job 2:10; Ps 17:3; Pro 15:28

The example of the Lord Jesus

He spoke the truth   John 8:45; 1 Pet 2:22

He spoke with grace   Luke 4:22

He spoke with consideration   John 4:16-18

He spoke with compassion  Luke 7:13

He spoke with gentleness  John 8:10-11; Mark 10:38

He spoke with tenderness   John 21:15-17; Luke 10:41-42

He knew when not to speak   1 Peter 2:23; Matthew 27:14

18th Jan 2010: Forgive our materialism

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. James 5:1-3

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21

Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, [and] be merry.” ‘ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So [is] he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:13-21

Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked– counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, [that] the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Revelation 3:17-20

17th Jan 2010: Create in us a good soil for the seeds of your word, to produce a rich harvest

A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. Luke 8:5-15

16th Jan 2010: Let your word be preached openly, clearly and without compromise

O earth, earth, earth, Hear the word of the LORD! Jeremiah 22:29

meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, Colossians 4:3

If anyone speaks, (let him) (speak) as the oracles of God. 1 Peter 4:11
