The Will and Testament of Christ

(Based on the message given by David Hathaway on Good Friday Morning 2012)

“17And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 20But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept” (1 Cor 19:17 – 20 KJV)

During the ‘Easter Season’ we remember the death of Christ, and have the added joy of celebrating His resurrection. We also celebrate the fact that Jesus’ death broke the power of sin and enables those who accept Him as Lord and Saviour to overcome sin and have a new life. However there is another reason why we should celebrate Jesus’ death.

The death of a loved one is often followed by the reading of a Will and the bequeathing of an inheritance (whether good or bad). No one has their Will released until after their death. Likewise Jesus could not bequeath anything to us until He died. Therefore we celebrate the death of Christ because it means an inheritance for us!

What is the Inheritance?

“3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ”…“11In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will” (Eph 1:3 and 11)

We inherited our spiritual life when we were born into the Kingdom of God but because Jesus died we also inherited a new Testament (Covenant or Will). In fact the New Testament is a Will detailing the promises of God and conditions by which the inheritance is inherited. This inheritance includes spiritual blessings that manifest the glory or goodness of God in our lives.

Who are the Heirs?

It is not uncommon for people who are in need to wish they had a rich uncle somewhere in the world who had left them an inheritance. Many family rifts occur because relatives are unhappy with the share of the inheritance they have obtained. Legal fees can eat up inheritances and a greedy solicitor may falsify the true financial situation of a deceased relative in order to steal another’s inheritance.

In this earthly realm inheritances can be more trouble than they are worth. This is not so with the inheritance left to us by Jesus. There is more than enough to be shared. We have it through salvation from God through Christ to us! Therefore anyone who has accepted Christ as their Lord and saviour has this inheritance.

What do we do with it?

We should spend our inheritance by living a life that glorifies God. We glorify God by being obedient to Him and His Word and living a life that gives the Glory back to God whether it be in business, at work, in the home or in church ministry. In this way the inheritance flows from God to us back to God.

What Guarantee is there that I have an Inheritance?

A Will is a type of contract or promise. Jesus sealed us with the Holy Spirit of promise, however had Jesus not died then the Holy Spirit could not have come to live in us and the promise would not be ours.

“13in whom also you, hearing the Word of Truth, the gospel of our salvation, in whom also believing, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14who is the earnest of our inheritance, to the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Eph 1:13 – 14 NKJV)

In verse 14 of Ephesians 1 the Holy Spirit is described as the “earnest” of our inheritance. In this verse the word earnest is used as a noun (a person, place or thing) and refers to a deposit, pledge or down payment. This indicates that although we are eligible for the inheritance we do not receive it in its entirety whilst earth bound.

“3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and unfading, reserved in Heaven for you 5by the power of God, having been kept through faith to a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time;” (1 Pet 1:3-5 NKJV)

The glory down here is just part of it but we receive the fullness of salvation only in Heaven. Thanks be to God that even in this earthly realm a down payment allows you access to the whole of what you placed the down payment on. If you pay a deposit on a house or car you get to use the whole car and live in the whole house. Likewise we have access to the entire inheritance obtained through Christ – Hallelujah!

How do I obtain it?

Let us not forget that everything Jesus earned was through obedience. Even in pain and suffering, he was obedient to the end. God has exalted Him and given Him a name above every other name. We also will be rewarded in Heaven by what we do down here. So now we can make our requests known to God and ask to receive in Jesus’ name and He will bequeath it.

Release of an inheritance is not always easy. There may be conditions or legal battles may ensue before the inheritance can be distributed. In the same way we must unlock the power of the inheritance by fighting and meeting conditions. This fight is a spiritual one against the flesh, the world and the devil in the power of Christ and upheld by the condition of obedience to Him in faith. All the instructions are in His Word.

Final Thoughts

If you are reading this and you do not have a relationship with Jesus. Please know that not only did Jesus die to free you from the sin that entangles your life and brings eternal death, but to give you a valuable inheritance. If you are already a follower of Jesus Christ, I encourage you as I encourage myself to thank Jesus for what He has done and fight for your inheritance, and when you receive it, give the Glory back to God. Amen

Four basic points for a victorious life

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:6 – 11 (KJV)

In 1 Peter, we are shown four points which will cause us to maintain a victorious life in Christ Jesus:

Humble Yourself

Jesus left the splendour of His glorious heavenly home, and came down as one lower than the angels, a servant even to the cross where he died for our sins. He then rose in victory over death and the grave. Jesus is our great example and if he being the Son of God humbled himself to obtain victory then more so us who are as clay. To live a victorious life we must recognise the magnitude of our God. He knows all things. We must realise that we cannot fix ourselves or our lives.

Give God Your Cares

Peter instructs us to “cast your care upon Him”. To cast can mean to throw or to mould. God wants us to give our troubles to Him. That means we give him our cares and we don’t take them back. Why does he want us to do this? Because he cares for us and does not want us to carry anything that causes us anxiety and fear. God is a compassionate and loving father, concerned for our welfare. He is more than able to deal with all our troubles. He is a mighty God.

Be Sober and Vigilant!

Satan is our adversary, he walks around seeking ways to steal, kill and destroy. Satan is constantly trying to tempt us. He even tried to tempt Jesus to abort God’s plan but was unsuccessful. Therefore we need to stay close to Jesus in order to resist the temptations. We stay close to Him by knowing his Word and having fellowship with him. There is no room for complacency or drunkenness with the world’s ‘pleasures’. Be on guard! Jesus was always on guard, even whilst asleep.

Resist the Devil!

Jesus informed Peter that Satan desired to sift him like wheat but Jesus prayed for him. Jesus is praying for us now that we would withstand Satan. Don’t allow the devil to isolate you. He tries to draw us away from God and each other. He may whisper a lie in your ear that your church brethren do not love you, even worse he may tell you that Jesus does not love you. These are lies; God loves us unreservedly no matter what our emotions say at any time. Resist his lies and temptations by being strengthened in God. Encourage each other. We all share the same enemy and are in the same boat. Don’t get out the boat! Jesus is the the boat with you…. He is the Captain.

Final Thoughts:

Peter walked with Jesus. He went from denying Jesus to receiving forgiveness and restoration and then preaching the gospel and seeing thousands saved. When he wrote this epistle he knew what he was talking about because he had lived it out. He advises us to humble ourselves, give our problems to Jesus, be watchful and resist the adversary. Even in the midst of suffering we can be blessed. In this we will develop firmness of character, strength of purpose and a wonderful victorious life!

For the Sake of the Nations – Israel a Worldwide Witness

On Sunday 29th January 2012, Avi Snyder the European director of Jews for Jesus, ministered to Worldwide Mission Fellowship. It was a powerful expounding of Gods purpose for Israel and His passion for the nations. The Jewish people are known as God’s ‘chosen people’. Both Orthodox and Messianic Jews know that they have a unique heritage but their difference lies in their understanding of their calling. The following is an overview of the message relayed by Avi Snyder.

God calls Israel to be His Chosen

In Exodus 19:5 – 6, when God delivered Israel from the bondage in Egypt, He says to his people “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” KJV

The key to understanding the purpose for which Israel was chosen is by understanding the role of priests in the Old Testament. Priests had two main roles, intercession and mediation. They went before the presence of God and interceded for the people and they spoke to the people on behalf of God. If the nation of Israel was to be a kingdom of priests, to whom and why?

The Purpose of the Call

God had the whole world in mind when He called Israel to be His chosen. They were to be a nation of priests to the entire world, the oracles of God and the people from which the Messiah came, a worldwide witness!

Genesis 12:1 – 3

“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” KJV

Rom 3:1 – 2

“Then what is the superiority of the Jew? Or what is the profit of circumcision? Much, by every way! Chiefly, indeed, because they were entrusted with the oracles of God.” NKJV

Rom 9:4 – 5

“Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen” KJV

God wanted Israel to proclaim his greatness throughout all the earth to all nations. God could have immediately annihilated the pharaoh who held Israel in bondage but even in this God’s plan for the nations was evident. He says to Pharaoh:

“For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth. For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.” Exo 9:14 – 16 KJV

The Law, the Land and the Covenant

In Genesis 12:1 – 2 God called Abraham to leave his homeland for a new promised land and covenanted to bless him and his seed.

“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: KJV

God gave the Jews the law to provoke the nations to jealousy so that the nations would ultimately want Him.

“Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?” Deut 4:5 – 7 KJV

From the beginning God was executing His purpose for the nations. He covenanted with Abraham to bless his seed, make them a chosen and blessed people, place them in a bountiful land and they would be a witness to the world of His greatness. With this in mind it is clear to see why God was so grieved when the Jews forsook Him and engaged in sinful practices and pagan actions compromising God’s agenda.

Chastised yet Beloved

God sent prophet after prophet to Israel who pleaded with them to turn from their ways and come back to God. The Jews refused to maintain an obedient relationship with the Lord and so God caused them to be cast out of their land. They would not live in the light of God’s ways so they were told to live in darkness.

Nevertheless, even in the chastisement of the Jews, God still had the nations in mind. Instead of being a witness of God’s blessings they became a witness of the consequences of not obeying God.

“Moreover I will make thee waste, and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of all that pass by. So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment unto the nations that are round about thee, when I shall execute judgments in thee in anger and in fury and in furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.” Ezek 5:14 – 15

Jesus Restores the Call

The Lord did not speak through the prophets to the Jews for 400 years and then the promised Messiah was born. After His resurrection and during an appearance to the disciples, Jesus was asked if he would now restore the Kingdom to Israel.

“Then, indeed, these coming together, they asked Him, saying, Lord, do You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? And He said to them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power, the Holy Spirit coming upon you. And you shall be witnesses to Me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:6 – 8 KJV

Jesus re-iterates God’s plan and purpose for the Jews to be a witness to the nations. This is confirmed in Romans:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Rom 1:16 KJV

“Indeed as regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes. But as regards the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. For the free gifts and calling of God are without repentance.” Rom 11:28 – 29 KJV

God’s plan remains intact and his purpose for Israel has not changed. Israel is still His beloved. The connection between the law, the land and the covenant still exists and God will fulfil His purpose. Jesus fulfilled the law, The Jews will be gathered back to the land, the covenant will be satisfied and the nations will know that Jehovah is Lord.

“And I will sanctify My great name, which was profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. And the nations shall know that I am Jehovah, says the Lord Jehovah, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes. For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all lands, and will gather you into your own land.” Ezek 36:23 – 24

An Irrevocable Call

God’s purpose for Israel and the nations has never changed and will not change. It is therefore our duty as gentile believers to pray for God’s will concerning the plans and purpose for Israel. Pray for their salvation, for the peace of Jerusalem and the fulfilment of the Jewish call. In this way we actively support God’s agenda.

Amen

Mission to Poland 2011

Worldwide Mission Fellowship’s Ministry Trip to Poland, 2011, this is a quick review of our second night of Ministry with Pastor Dennis Greenidge

The youth lead us in sweet praise and worship. The band was made up of a drummer 3 guitars a saxophone and a keyboard. The church was packed and there was a great sense of expectancy from the start.

As we worshiped we could feel the presence of God all around us. Pastor Dennis Greenidge preached on the 5 kings the message God gave him in prayer that has brought truth and freedom to churches all across Europe. The message is taken from Joshua 10:1-27.

At our home church we have already been blessed with this message but the new revelation that stood out was the fact that the Amorites worshiped the sun and the moon so Joshua asked God to stop the sun and moon showing that there is no god but the God of Israel.

The message really impacted the church, the alter was packed with people ready to receive their deliverance, there was hardly anybody left in their seats, after the awesome work of the Holy Spirit we broke into sweet worship as the young worship leaders came and played as we thank God for the victory.
