Watch your mouth

Watch-your-mouth

Today’s Reading: 1 Sam 14:1–52, James 3:1–12, Ps 119:97–120

Today’s Theme: Watch your mouth (what you take in and speak out)

Confess God’s ability

Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few.” 1 Samuel 14:6 (ESV)

Jonathan has real faith in God and openly declares with his mouth that nothing can stop God from saving by many or by few. His servant is spurred on by his conviction and declares that he is wholeheartedly behind Jonathan.

We should have this same sort of faith in God, our faith shouldn’t be in our ability but in God’s ability to give us the victory even when the odds are stacked against us.

Paul encourages us in Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

We should open our mouth today and declare that God is able and then act in faith.

Eat!

But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright. 1 Samuel 14:27 (ESV)

We read later in our psalm reading that God’s word is sweeter than honey and through it understanding comes (Psalm 119:103-104)

When we eat God’s word we will be filled with life and energy. Our eyes will be enlightened just like Jonathan’s became bright with life when he ate the honey.

Paul prayed for the Ephesian believers in Ephesians 1:18 “having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints” (see Ephesians 1:17–21 for fuller context)

What does it mean to eat God’s word, well as we will read in the psalms we should take in God’s word (listen or read) and then meditate or think about what we have read. These two things will help to fill us with the spiritual energy we need to press forward by living out the word.

Don’t just look at the word, eat it!

Don’t become ravenous

The people pounced on the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slaughtered them on the ground. And the people ate them with the blood. 1 Samuel 14:32 (ESV)

The fact is we are hungry, this is true physically and spiritually. We always eat physically because we can feel the hunger and seek to satisfy it.

In this account the people had been forced by the religiousness and rash vow of Saul to fast which came to a breaking point where they baceme ravenous and ate meat in a way contrary to all their own laws.

If we do not feed ourselves spiritually with God’s word we will become ravenous in the spirit, eating the next thing that passes and taking the life of that thing to energise our own lives. This can be dangerous because it could be at best foolish or at worst false teaching.

Jesus said blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness (Matthew 5:6).

Jesus also said in John 6:35 “…“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

Turn to the Lord for satisfaction today.

Watch the things you say

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. James 3:10 (ESV)

We need to ask the Holy Spirit to help us control our tongue because no man can do it himself. We can’t just say anything, we should use our tongue to bless others, not curse them.

What we take in is what will come out, which is why we need a steady intake of Gods word so our responses will be what God intends.

Think about God’s word

Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Psalm 119:97 (ESV)

We should take time to think about what we have just read in God’s word. If we love the word of God we need to go beyond reading to mediation, study and application

Understanding from the Word

Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Psalm 119:104 (ESV)

We get understanding from God’s word and it is the ruler we can use to measure everything else against. It is by the truth of God’s word that we identify false ways and stand against them.

Joy in the word

Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. Psalm 119:111 (ESV)

The word of God should bring us great joy, we should rejoice in reading and studying the word of God, if you find the word of God a miserable duty then ask God to change your heart today, you are missing out.

1 Samuel 14, James 3:1–12, Psalm 119:97–120

1-Samuel-14

1 Samuel 14

14:6 “Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armour bearer. “Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!” It’s true! Nothing can hinder You, Lord. If You choose, You can grant victory in a mighty battle with many warriors or few. As we seek to serve You, help us to be courageous knowing that You can work mightily even through us.

14:8-10 Jonathan’s bold plan could have resulted in death, but he trusts the Lord to either confirm or cancel it. Ask the Lord to confirm or cancel any plan you have to serve Him today. Listen to His answer carefully.

14:24 “Now the men of Israel were pressed to exhaustion that day, because Saul had placed them under an oath, saying, “Let a curse fall on anyone who eats before evening—before I have full revenge on my enemies.” So no one ate anything all day,” Saul places his own reputation and desires over the welfare of his men. Unless we have a heart of service we will be tempted to abuse the position that Christ has given us in Him for our own desires. Ask the Lord to help you be a servant in your sphere of influence.

14:29 How different Jonathan is from his father. Lord, Help us to realise that we don’t need to follow the damaging footsteps our parents might have left. You are willing to save us from the past and make us new in You.

14:39 Ask the Lord to help you slow down, so you don’t rush to judgment and make promises you may later regret before He has given you the whole picture. We have nothing to gain and much to lose by letting our emotions control us. When we speak let Your wisdom prevail and Your justice rule.

James 3:1–12

James 3:1-12 Ask God to make you particularly mindful of your speech in the days ahead. Pray that your speech will be characterised by a wholesomeness and kindness that flows out of a heart and mind made new by God’s Spirit.

Psalm 119:97-120

119:101 Refuse to walk on any path of evil today. Make it your desire to remain obedient to His Word.

119:105 Your Word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. Thank Him for giving His Word to you.

119:113 Ask the Lord to save you from indecision and double-mindedness about Him.

Empty Faith

Empty-Faith

Today’s Reading: 1 Sam 12:1–13:23, James 2:19–26, Ps 119:81–96

Today’s Theme: Empty Faith

Empty things

And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 1 Samuel 12:21 (ESV)

Samuel charges the people to follow the Lord and not empty things that cannot profit or deliver.

We need to hear this today too. It is the enemies plan to get us distracted with things that are ultimately empty and worthless.

We need to live our lives on purpose, we should not waste our lives pursuing vain goals or put our trust in any substitution for the Lord.

Avoid the empty promises of idolatry and sin, instead follow the Lord in faith.

Useless faith

Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? James 2:20 (ESV)

Even the demons believe in God so believing in God is simply not enough. Faith that does not have corresponding works is completely useless.

James goes on to make the argument that we are justified not only by faith but by works accompanying that faith in verse 24.

James concludes the chapter by stating works is like the spirit in a man’s body, remove the spirit and all you have is an empty corpse. Faith without works is dead, empty and useless.

Firmly fixed

Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Psalm 119:89 (ESV)

God’s word is trustworthy, it is backed up by God himself and is fixed which means it does not change with the times or cultures. The truth of God’s word is not relative it is absolute and final.

Gods word is not empty, it is solid, firm and fixed. We can put our faith in it today.

50 Things the Holy Spirit Does

50-things-Holy-Spirit

Here are some Things the Holy Spirit Does

  1. The Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8).

  2. The Spirit guides us into all truth (John 16:13).

  3. The Spirit regenerates us (John 3:5-8; Titus 3:5).

  4. The Spirit glorifies and testifies of Christ (John 15:26; 16:14).

  5. The Spirit reveals Christ to us and in us (John 16:14-15).

  6. The Spirit leads us (Rom. 8:14; Gal. 5:18; Matt. 4:1; Luke 4:1).

  7. The Spirit sanctifies us (2 Thess. 2:13; 1 Pet. 1:2; Rom. 5:16).

  8. The Spirit empowers us (Luke 4:14; 24:49; Rom. 15:19; Acts 1:8).

  9. The Spirit fills us (Eph. 5:18; Acts 2:4; 4:8, 31; 9:17).

  10. The Spirit teaches us to pray (Rom. 8:26-27; Jude 1:20).

  11. The Spirit bears witness in us that we are children of God (Rom. 8:16).

  12. The Spirit produces in us the fruit or evidence of His work and presence (Gal. 5:22-23).

  13. The Spirit distributes spiritual gifts and manifestations (the outshining) of His presence to and through the body (1 Cor. 12:4, 8-10; Heb. 2:4).

  15. The Spirit washes and renews us (Titus 3:5).

  16. The Spirit brings unity and oneness to the body (Eph. 4:3; 2:14-18). Here the Holy Spirit plays the same role that He plays in the Godhead. The Spirit is the life that unites Father and Son. The Spirit plays the same role in the church. When the Holy Spirit is operating in a group of people, He unites them in love. Therefore, a sure evidence of the Holy Spirit working in a group is Love and Unity. Not signs and wonders (those are seasonal and can be counterfeited).

  17. The Spirit is our guarantee and deposit of the future resurrection (2 Cor. 1:22; 2 Cor. 5:5).

  18. The Spirit seals us unto the day of redemption (Eph. 1:13; 4:30).

  29. The Spirit enables us to wait (Gal. 5:5).

  30. The Spirit supplies us with Christ (Phil. 1:19, KJV).

  31. The Spirit grants everlasting life (Gal. 6:8).32. The Spirit gives us access to God the Father (Eph. 2:18).

  32. The Spirit makes us (corporately) God’s habitation (Eph. 2:22).

  33. The Spirit reveals the mystery of God to us (Eph. 3:5).

  41. The Spirit gives us joy (1 Thess. 1:6).

  42. The Spirit enables some to preach the gospel (1 Pet. 1:12).

  43. The Spirit moves us (2 Pet. 1:21).

  44. The Spirit knows the things of God (1 Cor. 2:11).

  45. The Spirit casts out demons (Matt. 12:28).

  46. The Spirit brings things to our remembrance (John 14:26).

  47. The Spirit comforts us (Acts 9:31).

  48. The Spirit makes some overseers in the church and sends some out to the work of church planting [through the body] (Acts 20:28; 13:2).

Summary

The Holy Spirit unites us to Jesus Christ and to His body. The Spirit reveals Christ to us, gives us His life, and makes Christ alive in us. The Spirit takes the experiences of Jesus . . . His incarnation, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension . . . and brings them into our own experience. Because of the Holy Spirit, the history of Jesus Christ becomes our story and experience. Unfortunately, some movements have become known for their excesses in regard to the Holy Spirit’s work.

1Samuel 12-13; James 2:19-26 and Psalm 119:81-96

daily-prayer-fuel

1Samuel 12-13

12:1-3 Help us to be like Samuel, Lord, faithful to the end. May they say of us that we was not one to cheat or lie or take advantage of anyone weaker than ourselves. Where we have done any wrong, show us how to make it right. Make us Your servant. Make us like Jesus.

12:14-15 Time after time, You warn Your people to stay close to You. Time after time, they fail. Lord, have mercy on me when I fail You, too, either by choice or by indifference. Thank You for Your willingness to work with me and to forgive.

12:23 Is there someone you love who continues in sin? Do you feel like giving up on them? Ask The Lord to help you persevere in prayer, like Samuel. While there is life, there is hope. Pray for that person right now.

13:6 Sometimes life is scary, Lord, and I want to hide from it’s battles and strife. I pray that You will give us Your strength and Your perspective. You are with us. We have nothing to fear.

13:7-14 You know our hearts, O God. You see our every act. Help us not to blame others when we are caught in sin. There is no deceiving You and no one else’s opinion matters. Cleanse us and make us pure before You.

13:15 It is clear that Saul bases his assessment on a worldly assumption, size and strength determine the course of the battle. His equation leaves out God. How do you assess your potential for success? Is God’s help part of your equation?

James 2:19-26

2:21-26  Pray that God by His Holy Spirit will draw you and support you as you take that difficult step of faith and obedience He has been prompting you to take for Him.

Psalm 119:81-96

119:83 Ask The Lord in these trying
days to give you the spiritual stamina to cling to His principles and obey them even when you are exhausted with waiting.

119:95 Ask The Lord by the help of the Holy Spirit to help you to memorise verses of Scripture so you can quietly keep your mind on His decrees.
